Cancer, The Different Types

Sunday, September 13th, 2009
Mercy Maranga asked:

There are different types of cancer. Some of these cancers include ****** cancer. ****** cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of ******* and although it is common in women, it also affects men. It is the second most common cancer after lung cancer and it typically starts with a lump and if unchecked could spread beyond the ******. When this happens it will be called metastatic ****** cancer and will affect areas such as the bones, the liver, lungs and the brain.

Colon cancer, also called colorectal cancer involves cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and the appendix. Out of the many cancers in the world, it is the third most common cancer. Often, this type of cancer starts with mushroom-like growths in the colon called adenomatous polyps. Removal of these polyps during colonoscopy therefore reduces the subsequent risk of the condition. Lung cancer is a disease that occurs in the lungs and involves uncontrolled cell growth

Kidney cancer is a type of cancer that originates from the renal tubule and the renal pelvis of the kidney. There are two common types of kidney cancer. One is the renal cell carcinoma and the other is the renal pelvis carcinoma. Most cancers that originate in the renal tubule are renal cell carcinoma and cell adenocarcinoma while those that originate from the renal pelvis are transitional cell carcinoma.

Other types of cancer include **** cancer which originates in the ****. Bladder cancers is when abnormal cells grow in the urinary bladder while uterine cancer occurs in the uterus. Lymphoma is a type of cancer that starts in the lymphocytes of the immune system.

Often, this type of cancer starts with mushroom-like growths in the colon called adenomatous polyps. Removal of these polyps during colonoscopy therefore reduces the subsequent risk of the condition. The risk of colon cancer, like is the case with other types of cancer increases with age and often it occurs in people who are in their 60s or 70s.

Women who have suffered from breast, uterus or ovarian cancer have a higher risk of developing colon cancer. Heredity is also another cause of this type of cancer. Individuals who have close relatives who have suffered from the disease before the age of 55 are at a higher risk of developing the disease. Smokers are also at a high risk of developing the disease as compared to non-smokers.

Studies have showed that people who consume mostly red meat and less fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and poultry have an increased risk of developing the disease. Physical activity reduces the risk of contracting this type of cancer and therefore regular exercise is recommended. People in industrialized countries are at a relatively high risk of suffering from colon cancer than those in developing countries.

Colon cancer takes sometime to develop and even sometimes may take years. Early diagnosis therefore improves the chances of curing it. Screening for this disease can be done through colonoscopy, digital rectal exam and through fecal occult blood where a test on the blood in the stool is done.

Prevention of Colorectal Cancer

Thursday, August 6th, 2009
Groshan Fabiola asked:

The colon and rectum is a part of the large intestine and their functions are to absorb water and nutrients from food this way concentrating the stool, and to form and store the stool until its evacuation.

Cancer is an affection which interferes in the process of cell division and makes the cells divide chaotically, leading to a mass of abnormal cells that forms a tumor. Colorectal cancer is the disease that affects the cells from the colon and rectum creating a malign or benign tumor.

Colorectal cancer can evolve until it spreads to other organs like lungs, bones and liver, building tumors over there too. Tumors take food and oxygen from the other healthy cells and in the end they take their space.

Scientists have declared that in US 1 of 17 people are at risk of developing colorectal cancer, and the most affected ones are men.

In the whole world, colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer in males and the fourth in women. It is quite rare in Asia and Africa but you can find it frequently in the Western world. Those who have adopted western diets are at risk to develop colorectal cancer.

Most of the colon cancers are adenocarcinomas, meaning that they come from polyps situated inside the intestines.

These polyps are benign at first but left untreated for several years they will end up transforming into malign polyps and cause cancer.

This adenomatous polyposis syndrome is found in the same family members, so it has a genetic base. There is a type of nonpolyposis colorectal cancer syndrome which also occurs in the same family members but now people who are at risk can be identified through genetic screening.

By finding these cancer sensible people doctors can council them and program them for regular screening in order to prevent cancer from occurring.

People who suffer of Crohn disease or who have had ****** or uterine cancer and a family history of colon cancer are at risk of developing colorectal cancer too.

Scientists have not found out exactly why this disease occurs but they believe that if you are obese and you follow a diet that is rich in proteins and fats and low in fiber you might develop cancer

Drinking alcohol is also a factor that leads to cancer.

Until now scientists believe that estrogen replacement therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Colon Cancer Statistics

Friday, July 10th, 2009
Groshan Fabiola asked:

Colon cancer is one of the most feared types of cancer by both men and women. The reason is that colon cancer is now fourth on the most known cancer list in many countries around the world. It is also known to be the second most common cause of death in countries like the United State of America. So, I belive these are some pretty good reasons to fear colon cancer, am I right?

If you belive that these are not good enough reasons to fear colon cancer, then here are some more statistics about this type of cancer. A person that has reached the age of fifty has almost five percent risk of being diagnosed with colon cancer. Furthermore, people at this age have also a three percent risk of dying from colon cancer. If these statistics about colon cancer still do not worry you, then you should also know that a person that dies from colon cancer looses almost thirteen years of his/ her life, which is a pretty big number if you ask me.

Moreover, statistics say that more than eight percent of all colon cancer cases arise from a certain type of polyps called adenomatous. If these polyps are smaller than one centimeter, then the risk of developing colon cancer is less than one percent. However, if these polyps are bigger than one centimeter, then the risk of colon cancer rises. Ten percent of these polyps turn into colon cancer in then years time and more than twenty percent in twenty year’ s time. Furthermore as time also passes by the risk of developing colon cancer increase as well. If at the age of forty, the risk of those polyps becoming malignant was about twenty percent, then at fifty it increases to twenty five percent and at the age of seventy the percentage goes as high as fifty.

Most of the colon cancer cases happen in people that are not exposed to any particular risk factors. However, twenty percent of colon cancer cases occur in people with certain risk factors. Family history of colon cancer is the most common of these risk factors. A small percentage of these cases, almost six percent, are also caused by genetic syndromes. People that suffer from ulcerative colitis are also more at risk of developing colon cancer as so are those that have been diagnosed with large polyps or even with colon cancer.

A Daily Dose of Aspirin May Very Well Treat Your Colon Cancer!

Sunday, June 28th, 2009
Dr Karen asked:

One of the major breakthroughs in the study of potential cancer treatments to date is the use of “everyday aspirin” to reduce the risk and spread of colon cancer. Researchers throughout the world quickly clung to the concept and the study has produced a variety of different results most of which appears “too good to be true”.

At the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, they studied the results of aspirin on over 800 stage three cancer patients. Each of which received standard chemotherapy and surgery, however, a selected few were also given 325mg of aspirin on a regular basis. At the end of the study they found that the group which had taken the aspirin doses showed over 50% reductions in recurrence over the group that only received chemotherapy after surgery. Amazing, right?

In 2003, the New England Journal of Medicine, printed a review of two separate studies and Ernest Hawk’s (chief of gastrointestinal cancer prevention research at the National Cancer Institute) response to them. One of the studies looked at persons who had already been diagnosed with colon cancer. Some of whom were given the standard adult dosage of aspirin (325mg) daily and the others given a placebo pill. They observed the patients for a year, after which they found that the aspirin group had thirty–seven percent (37%) fewer growths developed. The second study looked at persons who had a history of polyps; however, this time a lower dose of aspirin was administered. This produced a nineteen percent (19%) reduction in polyp risk; unfortunately, the regular dose had no benefit. Earnest Hawk reviewed both studies and concluded that there was no good explanation for the difference in dosages, but implored the public to focus on the fact that both studies proved that aspirin in fact has anti-cancerous effects.

Dr. John Baron of Dartmouth Medical School directed a similar study and the results recorded in Yahoo! news in April, of this year. His study was intended to see if aspirin would prevent the recurrence of polyps after the growths have been removed during routine colonoscopies. He found that 80-milligram baby aspirin size taken daily can reduce this risk by nineteen percent (19%); a similar result to the study above. He noted that the dose tested is the same dosage already being taken by millions of average Americans in an attempt to prevent heart attacks. These studies will just prove an additional benefit.

Federal health officials say that they are extremely close to recommending that daily doses of aspirin be considered for patients who have had polyps removed. This suggestion, however, can not be given until they are one hundred percent (100%) sure that aspirin does indeed reduce polyp development. With this in mind they have decided to wait until they receive the results of future studies.

And so the studies continue to prove that just a daily dose of “everyday” aspirin can reduce the development of colon cancer. In the words of researcher, Dr. John Baron, “[while] it’s clear aspirin will not be a magic bullet,” it might very well be the alternative treatment that you have been searching for.

How Does Cancer Affect Cells?

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
Groshan Fabiola asked:

Cancer is the name for a disease that can affect cells from all the organs and body’s structures and is considered to be life threatening. Cancer determines cells to divide in an uncontrollable way. Generally the cells of the body divide only when needed, like when they grow old and other cells need to be produced in order to replace them or when they are in a small amount and the body needs more of them.

Because the cells are produced in an increased number, a mass of unknown tissue will form, known as a tumor (this tumor can be benign or malign).

The benign form of the tumor is considered not to be harmful. It can be easily removed and will not spread to other organs. The possibility for this tumor to reappear is much reduced.

The malign form of the tumor is also known as cancer and is considered to be a threat to life. It can affect organs that are situated near the tumor and it can also get into the bloodstream or lymphatic system and reach other organs creating new tumors in the whole body. This is known as metastasis. The secondary disease will be named after the primary disease, because the metastatic cancerous cells have the same structure with the basic tumor cells.

Taking colon cancer for an example, if the colon cancer cells spread toward the liver and affect it, the liver disease will be called metastatic colon cancer.

In the whole world, colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer in males and the fourth in women. It is quite rare in Asia and Africa but you can find it frequently in the Western world. Those who have adopted western diets are at risk to develop colorectal cancer. Doctors believe that this type of cancer is developing from polyps situated in the large intestine (colon and rectum are a part of the large intestine). These polyps are considered to be benign but left untreated for years they can transform in malign tumors. The polyps can be removed easily during a colonoscopy performed by the doctor.

Colorectal cancer can affect nearby structures and can even get into the bloodstream or lymphatic system and spread towards liver and lungs where it will produce another tumor. If metastasis has occurred, the hope of treatment efficiency is considered to have reduced drastically.

Faq About Colorectal Cancer

Monday, May 11th, 2009
Groshan Fabiola asked:

1. What is colorectal cancer?

Cancer is the name for a disease that can affect cells from all the organs and body’s structures and is considered to be life threatening. The colon and rectum are a part of the large intestine and their function is to absorb nutrients and water from the food that passes through the intestine before it goes out of the body. Colorectal cancer is the disease that affects the cells from the colon and rectum creating a malign or benign tumor.

2. How can I know if I have colorectal cancer?

Some of the symptoms of this type of cancer are: diarrhea alternating with constipation and the feeling that the bowel has not emptied completely even after going to the bathroom. Also, seeing blood in the stool can be a clue for colorectal cancer. Abdominal pains and bloating can be present and feeling tiredness and vomiting can occur too.

These symptoms also appear in other affections and having them does not necessarily mean that you have colorectal cancer. A doctor will be able to diagnose your affection by performing some quick tests.

3. Why does colorectal cancer appear?

Scientists have not found out exactly why this disease occurs but they believe that if you follow a diet that is rich in proteins and fats and low in fiber you might develop cancer. Also, having a family history of colorectal cancer and ****** or uterus cancer could be a risk for you. Drinking alcohol is also a factor that leads to cancer. If you have polyps on the inner wall of the intestine and you leave them untreated they can transform into malign tumors (meaning that cancer had occurred).

4. What data exist about the frequency of colorectal cancer?

In the whole world, colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer in males and the fourth in women. It is quite rare in Asia and Africa but you can find it frequently in the Western world. Those who have adopted western diets are at risk to develop colorectal cancer.

Scientist believe that in the close future 1 or 2 people out of every 100 will develop colorectal cancer after the age of 50.

Until now, 4 out of 10 patients are diagnosed with cancer only after their disease had advanced to a next stage, meaning that treatment options will not be available in such a large number and probably the most indicated procedure will be surgery. Only in a small number of cases patients will require drug treatment.

5. How can colorectal cancer be treated?

Treating cancer is made after staging the disease, meaning that the doctors will try to find out how much the cancer has spread.

The most indicated procedure is surgery because it removes the tumor. In some cases the tumor will not reappear. Sometimes, during the surgery the doctor will be forced to perform a colostomy.

If the cancer has spread, chemotherapy or radiation therapy will be recommended because it will kill the cancerous cells and will stop them from dividing and spreading even more.

Colon Cancer is Caused by Two Genes

Sunday, May 10th, 2009
Groshan Fabiola asked:

After researchers discovered another colon cancer gene, the second so far, they concluded that they have found the causes of over 90 percent of the disease in its inherited form.

Every year 156,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer and six of those cases are caused by those two genes together. In the same time, around 30 percent of non inherited cases are caused by these two genes of colon cancer.

It is expected that in the near future researchers will come out with some new tests to identify the presence of these genes in an individual and if either one of these is found, doctors can do tumor checks more frequently permitting them to discover them earlier while they can still be surgically removed. With this new knowledge it is assumed that over 90 percent of all that cases caused by inherited colon cancer can be evoited.

Researchers are confident that this new discovery will lead to new anticancer drugs in a very short time period, a period of two to five years.

The genes are found on different chromosomes, but both of them act almost in the same way, being just like a guardian checking every new piece of synthesized DNA to make sure that no mutations appeared. But, if one of these genes is corrupted the new synthesized DNA pieces will be altered really bad and you will develop cancer as a result. Usually inherited cancer appears at the age of 50.

Thanks to these new discoveries new screening tests will be available for the general population. Most specialists agree that this is a huge step for the medical science resulting in the saving of countless lives and a great cost reduction in the medical system.

One of these genes is present in about 1 every 200 people all around the world making it the number one genetic defect. Screening will save a huge amount of lives but researchers already raise economic concerns regarding the medical health care; it may be possible that future agencies will deny the right to a health insurance just on the reason that a client presents a higher risk because he has one of these genes.

Fending Off Colon Cancer With Colon Cleansing

Monday, April 20th, 2009
Daniel Millions asked:

Colorectal cancer is one of the top cancers that kill throughout the world. It is the number two deadliest cancer in America. Most people are uncomfortable talking about colon and digestive issues because they were taught at a young age to not talk about their bodily functions. Some people don’t even look at their stools before they flush. But our colon health can tell us a lot about our overall health. And if our colon isn’t healthy, the rest of our body will eventually become unhealthy, too. Colon cleansing can help.

Your colon becomes contaminated with toxins when fecal matter gets stuck to the walls and in the pockets of the lower intestine. This fecal matter ferments and becomes a breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria. This can cause bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. In turn, your digestive system gets even more out of whack. The more toxic bacteria in your colon, the more toxins leach back into your bloodstream. These toxins can cause many different health problems. Following are twenty health problems that can be prevented or reduced in severity by colon cleansing regularly:

1. Age spots

2. Bad breath (halitosis)

3. Bloating

4. Candida

5. Constipation

6. Diarrhea

7. Diverticulitis

8. Diverticulosis

9. Dull skin tone

10. Eczema

11. Fatigue

12. Gas

13. Inability to lose weight or weight gain

14. Indigestion

15. Intestinal organism infection

16. Irritable Bowel Syndrome

17. Joint pain or stiffness

18. Lower back pain

19. Muscle aches

20. Poor digestion

Colon cleansing breaks down hardened fecal matter so it can pass and also purges many intestinal parasites. A colon cleanse can be done by having a colonic, also called colon hydrotherapy. This is a procedure that should only be done by a licensed hydrotherapist and is not appropriate for people with some preexisting colon conditions.

Other colon cleanses involve fasting and herbal and probiotic supplements or a very restricted diet plus the supplements. These colon cleansing plans usually last for less than a week. Then you start reintroducing foods into your diet, but you keep eating colon-friendly foods.

These colon-friendly foods will help keep your colon cleansed naturally and will keep you at a lower risk for colorectal cancer:

* Fibrous fruits like pears, apples, figs and blueberries

* Fibrous veggies like turnip greens, peas and brussels sprouts

* Fiber plus protein found in most all beans

* Whole grains and whole grain foods like flaxseed and oatmeal

* Yogurt which contains live, colon-friendly, bacteria

These foods should be eaten rarely to maintain a healthy colon:

- Red meats and animal fat

- All dairy except yogurt

- Refined sugars

- Most all fast foods or other heavily processed or preserved foods

If you are like most of us eating a typical American diet, fast food almost qualifies as a staple of our diet and, for the most part, fast food includes all of the bad foods for our colon in a single meal. The other meals we eat aren’t exactly greens and beans.

To jumpstart a healthy colon, a colon cleanse may be a good idea for you. Pick a colon cleansing system with help from your doctor and alternative healthcare provider. A colon cleanse will improve your health physically and mentally. Not only will you be healthier but you will actually feel the positive effects of a colon cleansing.

Discover 4 Quality Benefits of an Effective Colon Cleanser

Monday, April 6th, 2009
Wycliffe Williams asked:

People today are using an effective colon cleanser to increase their quality of life. A natural colon cleanser is even better. Not only does the natural type of cleanser drastically cut unwanted side effects; it also decreases stress on the colon and also the body.

Colon Hydrotherapy has gained increasing prominence here lately. It is however, an invasive procedure. Many people today are shying away from invasive procedures. They are searching for non-invasive procedures. Invasive or non-invasive, it really is a matter of personal choice. This article will discuss four practical benefits you can achieve using an effective colon cleanser.

Colon Hydrotherapist’s Use Discretion

Unfortunately, many people attempt to perform medical treatments on themselves. However, it is always best to call in the professionals. Listen closely, the nature of a colon cleanse is private, agreed? Discretion is vitally important to this type of work. If you choose to use the services of a trained colon hydrotherapist, you have made a good choice. They realize that they are dealing with a very sensitive area of your body.

Your Colon And Your Exercise Regimen

In a recent study, a group of highly active men were pitted against their inactive counterparts. This study occurred over an extended period of time. The colon cancer risk for the highly active men plummeted by a whopping 45 to 80 percent.

Conversely, their less active counterparts were exposed to five times the increased risk of colon cancer. Other separate studies have indicated that lack of exercise increases colon cancer risk. Moreover, studies have also shown that physical activity actually helps protect against certain cancers.

Your Colon And Alcohol

The World Health Organization has adopted the stance of total alcohol abstinence. They have wisely aligned themselves with numerous scientists, physicians and health professionals. Alcohol consumption immediately impacts your intestinal systems in a negative way.

The results can be:

1. cirrhosis of the liver

2. gastroesophageal reflux disease

3. acute pancreatitis

4. colon cancer

5. peptic ulcers

These are but a few of the complications resulting from alcohol consumption.

Lead A Healthier Life

An effective colon cleanser will help you to naturally rid your colon of impacted *****. Just think, over time this will help you to lead a healthier life. If you use a colon cleanser on a daily basis, you would be well on your way to eliminating headaches, fatigue and a myriad of other physical challenges.
